Good Morning
Even as COVID-19 status in the country continues to be a draining ‘narrative’, what always seems like light at the end of the tunnel ends up being just but the beginning.
It’s barely a week since Kenyans saw a beam of hope after COVID-19 restrictions were eased and a low positivity rate was reported; now the celebration seems to have been cut short after news that the ministry of health confirmed 8 cases of the Indian variant in the country.
With this variant being linked to the surge of cases in India to more than 20 million; being detected in Kenya seems like another nightmare. The government has however assured Kenyans that measures have been put in place to curb its spread.
Anyone could easily view this as a moment of panic but I believe more is required to survive in the midst of a pandemic than developing cold feet. Check out some of the key things you should know about the Indian variant.
- The variant was first identified in India in December 2020 and an earlier version detected in October 2020.
- India’s COVID-19 variant has been reported in at least 17 other nations.
- Possibly has mutations which makes it easier to spread and cause severe illness.
- Even though some reports indicate that it is more contagious WHO says more study is yet to be done to establish whether the variant causes a surge in the COVID-19 cases.
- There is a possibility that vaccines are effective against the variant.
Having seen the impact this variant has had on India, let us continue to observe the safety measures.
