Taking photos is what I love to do, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to turn it into my career– still working on it.

Keep reading for my 7 tips for building a photography business without burning out:

1. Treat everyone like Beyoncé.

Seriously! The world isn’t actually that big, and neither is Nairobi. You never know who you are sharing an elevator with. The person in the corner may just be a Very Important Person.

Don’t miss getting a photo of them. I used to be so shy, but, you can’t be a shy event photographer. It’s just not going to work.

2. Follow Your Bliss.

My 20s were and still are very fun, I must admit!

Allow yourself to evolve and grow. Although being at events on the daily helped me build to where I am now, I enjoy a much quieter and more balanced life nowadays, photographing weddings, portraits, personal branding, boudoir and events.

Even if photographing events isn’t a big part of your future career plans, it can be a really great way to get your name out there, network, build your portfolio and have incredible experiences.

Let’s face it – most photographers aren’t going to rub shoulders with the stars as an event photographer for decades to come (unless you’re the late Bill Cunningham, of course).

3. Become One with Manual Mode.

Photographing events is an incredible real-life “boot camp” to get to know your camera very, very well. Moment to moment the lighting can change completely. Use an event as an opportunity to learn about light, and master Manual mode in your camera. More about this will be explored in my workshop.

4. Your Body is your Most Valuable Piece of Equipment.

I’m naturally a holistic + spiritual person, and that injects itself into how I run my business and how I work as a photographer. Being a photographer can be a pretty demanding job, both physically and mentally.

If I can help one person avoid total burnout, I would feel so fulfilled. I can’t wait to share some of my best “Live Your Best Life” tips at my workshop!

5. Know Thyself.

Being self-employed, and being an entrepreneur can very much be a journey of mastering the self, and working through your fears. The more you get to know yourself, the more you can spot your blind spots and work though them, to continuously uplevel your success.

6. Nice Lens, Gurl.

What equipment should I use to photograph an event? What kinds of shots should I get for the client? How do I negotiate with a client? I’ll be going over this in depth at my workshop! Plus there will be lots of time for Q+A and individual support. You can even show me a few photos and get feedback from me!

7. All About The Editing.

During the editing is when you can really perfect your voice. I highly curate my event galleries to create an experience that flows well, when the audience is clicking through. I’m going to be running through my editing flow + philosophy at my workshop and show you what I do and how I do it.
