As Colonel Cyrus Odhiambo Oguna settles into the controversial position of Government Spokesman, the mention of the seat evokes memories of the day a newly-elected President Uhuru Kenyatta fired one.

In August 2013, Uhuru fired then government spokesman, Mr Muthui Kariuki and redeployed him back to serve in junior government positions.

Kariuki was new in office, but his noise was getting out of hand, a trend that got the President thinking of what to do with him.

At one point Kariuki claimed that the former Prime Minister who had just lost elections had refused to surrender six state cars despite being officially out of the government.

Kariuki said Raila Odinga had mounted an illegal siren atop one of his vehicles to act as a chase car.

“He is forever mourning that the government is not giving him recognition, yet he has refused to return six government vehicles and has gone on and bought an illegal siren and is forever driving all over town using the wrong lanes,” Mr Kariuki said.

But before the month of September, a communication would come from the Office of the President, saying the government was restructuring its communications for “coherence, clarity and consistency.”

“The Office of Public Communication Secretary and Government Spokesman does not fit within the new structure of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration and has consequently been shut,” the statement said.
