A team led by Bomet Township Chief Reuben Ngetich raided a homestead in Motigo village in Bomet and arrested two people, one of them a woman and a girl, for allegedly attempting to conduct an abortion on the minor girl.
It is alleged that the team led by the chief got information that the 18-year-old girl from a school in Nakuru County had traveled to Bomet County to have her 6-month pregnancy terminated by the woman who is alleged to be an expert.
Police are trying to understand how the girl came in contact with the woman and got her to agree to conduct the procedure on the girl.
Police suspect there might be a bigger racket and that and that abortions have been undertaken in the past too in such cases.
“We ambushed them in one of the home at Motigo village in Bomet and found that the girl has already paid Ksh.2,000 for the service, she was still having a pending Ksh.500 in order for the services to be rendered,” said the Chief.
Mr. Ngetich said several cases of young girls lining up at the woman’s home had been reported in the past but there had been no evidence to implicate her.
“We are now glad to have the evidence,” he said.
The victim was taken for examination at Longisa County Referral Hospital then booked at Bomet Police Station as police conclude investigations.
Article 26(4) on the Right to Life states: “Abortion is not permitted unless, in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is a need for emergency treatment or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other written law.”
In this regard, a 50-year-old woman and a form three student risk imprisonment for up to fourteen years after they were arrested after they were allegedly caught planning to procure an abortion.
When the abortion procedure is carried out on a minor girl, a government panel takes a call; the doctor alone cannot make a decision on it.
