29 Dead as Garissa-Isiolo Boundary Row Escalates

Garissa Governor Ali Korane now wants Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i to intervene on the boundary dispute between Isiolo and Garissa Counties.

Korane says the conflict has claimed an estimated 29 innocent lives so far saying time has come to find lasting solutions to the dispute.

Addressing the press after touring the troubled border area, Korane regretted that the conflict has persisted for long and has now escalated because of the dry season as communities fight over water and pasture.

Korane who met elders from the sides involved in the conflict said the wanton destruction of lives and property must come to an end.

The Governor explained the history surrounding the conflict and identified 10 contested settlements from both sides, where communities have lived for decades.

Korane now wants the boundary issue revisited by the IEBC, saying the current boundary dates back to colonial times.

“This boundary need to be re-drawn to solve the conflict, but communities who occupy the settlements must be protected so that they are not displaced,” Korane said.

The Governor said the administrative units along the border especially in Lagdera constituency may fall in either side of Garissa or Isiolo but communities should not be displaced from their land.
