Shocking number of patients & dead bodies detained at KNH over sh 6 b debt

If you thought the government debts are shocking then wait and see the health debt of Kenyans that will blow your mind.

Ministry of Health has revealed that Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been detaining patients and bodies over an accumulated debt of almost Ksh 6 billion.

In a report released on Thursday, the Ministry noted that 184 patients and 387 bodies have been detained by the facility due to the debt.

The report put the exact non-payment at Ksh 5, 692,834,284.

The ministry released the details following an expose done by Citizen TV that revealed how women are being detained at the facility over non-payment.

In response to the detention, the ministry noted: “To address the accumulation of patient bills in hospitals, the Ministry communicates to relevant hospitals to waive the bills or enter into a credit facility or cases that are brought to our attention.”

Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali awhile back moved a motion in parliaments seeking to scrap hospital bills for patients who die while receiving treatment in all public hospitals.

The first time MP further argued the government was misappropriating funds on projects that had little impact on the lives of Kenyans.

“We are planning to spend billions of shillings on referendum and census yet our people are languishing in poverty and some dying in hospitals, we made invest in our health sector, he said.

The former investigative journalist has established himself as a defender of the less privileged in the society and has vowed to represent their interests in Parliament.
