Kenyans question the role of Kenya heroes council amid Congestina Achieng’s plight

Kenyans have expressed their disappointment in the Kenyan government following the plight of its boxing heroine Congestina Achieng.

The Kenya Heroes Act (2014) established a Heroes Council that’s supposed to; identify and recommend national heroes; and administer State assistance to national heroes where necessary.

Disappointed Kenyans argue that Congestina Achieng should be helped by the State.

This followed the move by Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, who after hearing about the heroine’s plight, airlifted her from her rural home in Siaya to Nairobi for rehabilitation.

Sonko further promised that he will secure her employment after she undergoes rehabilitation.

The move follows a video of Conjestina in a sorry state that went viral with many Kenyans offering help.

A director at the National Authority for the Campaign against drug abuse made a commitment to take the boxing legend to the best facility in Kenya.

Several celebrities have also weighed in on the matter saying that people should stop exposing her to sympathy and ensure that she gets the help she needs.

About six years ago, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and had been to the Mathare Hospital in 2012 after she drifted into a psychotic episode after years in the boxing ring.

Kenyans however argued that governor Sonko will not always  be airlifting every suffering hero for treatment and offering them jobs.

They claim that it is much easier for him to walk to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office and ask why the Heroes Council is not operational, adding that the move will help save all Kenyans time, money, and populist politics.
