FIFA asked to lift suspension on skipper despite positive test for cocaine

Australian, Denmark and France skippers have stood in unison and asked the global football governing body Fifa to lift the ban on Peru skipper Paolo Guerrero so he can play at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The captain tested positive for prohibited substance cocaine in October and has been serving a 14- month ban from the body which is likely to see him miss the World Cup in Russia. He however says that he ingested it by drinking tea.

The letter to football’s world governing body asks for a “temporary interruption” to his suspension so he can appear for Peru at their first World Cup in 36 years.

Peru beat New Zealand over two legs in a play-off in November to qualify for the World Cup, their first appearance at the tournament since 1982.
