A first-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) was stabbed to death on Thursday night as she resisted robbers according to reports.

Tabitha Muthoni was walking together with a friend near Segal Hotel at 8pm when they were confronted by thugs who demanded their mobile phones. A confrontation ensued and Tabitha was stabbed on the neck before the thugs fled.

The stabbed student was rushed to the institution’s hospital where she succumbed to her wounds.

The students’ union asked students to prepare for a peaceful demonstration to protest the killing. In a notice, Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (Jkusa) officials called on students to congregate at 9am for a peaceful demonstration to protest the murder.

“This is to inform all students that we will be having a peaceful demonstration in Juja Environs. Following series of killings, most recent having been on 7th Feb 2019 at Segal Hotel,” the notice read.

This is not the first time such situations have been witnessed.

Just recently, in May, 2018, a student from the same institution was stabbed to death after he alighted in Juja from a meet-up with friends as he was headed to his house near the institution.

In 2017, a 22-year-old JKUAT student body was found chopped up. Reports indicated she had quarrelled with the brother over a Weetabix meal before her death.

Kenyans online evidently shared their anger.

Here are some of them:

@frankphaebyan says, “The comrades are trying to calm the Juja police from rioting but the police are very adamant. Police stop rioting in Jkuat and provide security to the comrades or the crimes are sponsored by you. Were you the killers of Tabitha? Justice must be served.”

@ongayamutasya while bashing the police says, “ts sad that police in juja have turned out to be tumbocrats, sleeping on their jobs and attending clubs instead of taking care of comrades….. We are tired of this …… Peace has been suspended.”

While @franklinches1 rants, “University students are not CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, we demand that you look into the safety of all university students & now jkuat comrades & juja at large ..”
