Murkomen Calls for Closure of Schools Amid Coronavirus Scare

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen is now urging the government to consider closing all schools amid coronavirus scare.

Murkomen in a tweet on Sunday argued that this will allow the Health Ministry to prepare well for better ways of containing COVID-19 in the country.

According to the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Children are vulnerable to flu hence the virus could spread fast through Children in School.

“Ordinarily, flu spreads fast through Children in School and other social places. It’s my considered opinion that schools should be closed as from tomorrow until the relevant authorities prepare well for better ways of containing #COVID19 in Kenya.” Murkomen tweeted.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Friday while confirming the first coronavirus case in the country stated that school programmes will proceed as planned.

However, the CS banned with immediate effect all inter-school events and conferences.

Murkomen’s plea echoes that of KUPPET who also urged the government to consider earlier closure of schools across the country in order to help contain the deadly virus.

This comes after Chief Justice David Maraga in a press conference at the supreme court announced the suspension of all court hearings across the country beginning Monday, March 16.

Maraga said that all new cases and arrests except serious ones will be dealt with at the police stations in line with the guidelines issued by the inspector general of the police.

All public gatherings in the country were suspended following the confirmation of the first case of coronavirus case.
