Ruto Meets Kalonzo in Sudan, Kiunjuri’s Unforgivable Sin, Senior Police Officers Transferred

Good morning,

Western Kenya is the second-most populous voting bloc in the country after Mt Kenya. Despite the huge numbers, the region has had very little or no impact in the past three general elections.

This is because of Luhya leaders pulling their people in different directions. Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula and even William Ruto have a substantial number of elected leaders in the region. It is not clear why the Luhya nation has refused to unite and speak one voice like other regions.

COTU Secretary Francis Atwoli, a self-proclaimed Luhya elder, always delivers different messages according to his audience. When in Western, he says Mudavadi should be president but when in Nairobi he claims President Uhuru Kenyatta is too young to retire.

The infighting in the house of Mulembe will rare its ugly hand again on Saturday as the leaders prepare to host parallel meetings over the BBI report. Atwoli and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya will lead the BBI crusaders at the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kakamega town. Mudavadi and Wetangula, the two most senior Luhya leaders will not attend.

Why can’t these people come together and agree on the direction they want the community to take? Will the Luhya community ever produce a President?
