Ole Gunnar Reveals Sir Alex Ferguson Advice That Helped Him Choose Assistant

A year after being appointed the Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he first spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson before settling on Mike Phelan as his assistant.

Solskjaer was first handed the job on an interim basis after United parted ways with Jose Mourinho following a poor start to the 2018-2019 season.

The Norwegian manager brought with him Ferguson’s former assistant Mike Phelan and enjoyed instant success before sauntering to the end of the season.

Speaking in an interview with UTD Podcast, Solskjaer revealed how he needed Ferguson to get hold of Phelan, “I was trying to get hold of Mick Phelan because I knew I needed Mick with me.

“He was apparently doing a coaching session at a college up in Burnley and I couldn’t get hold of him. From the moment I got the call, I rang him, I rang him and I rang him.

“I rang the gaffer [Sir Alex] first by the way and said ‘I have been offered this and what do you think?’. He said ‘yeah you will be fine’. I knew I needed Mick.

“I finally got to hold him and he said yes. He had about 150 missed calls. The gaffer rang him as well and said ‘you need to speak to Ole’.”

Manchester United will face Watford in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday.
