Sterling Defends Joe Gomez After Boos

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has leaped to the defense of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez after he was booed off as he came on for England during the 7-0 mauling of Montenegro on Thursday night.

Gomez was involved in a confrontation with Sterling during Sunday’s league match between the Arch rivals and on Monday again they squared off as they reported for national duty and coach Gareth Southgate made a decision to omit Sterling from the team that played Montenegro.
As Gomez came on for Mason Mount in the 70th minute, he was jeered by the Three Lions supporters who blame him for Sterling’s omission. The Manchester City forward, who was in the stands during the clash applauded as the defender got to the pitch for the final 20 minutes.
After the game, he took to social media to urge fans to lay off the youngster whilst taking full blame for the alteration between them.
“To all the @England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again: it was hard for me to see my teammate get booed for something that was my fault. Joe hasn’t done anything wrong & for me to see someone who keeps his head down and works hard. Especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong. I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence.  I felt as though I had to say this get home safe every one ❤️ #Euro2020,” he tweeted.
