Gor Mahia head coach Steven Polack has picked goalkeeper Robert Mapigano for praise from their Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played on Sunday, October 6 against Zoo Kericho.

Gor had to toil until the 82nd minute to force a slim 1-0 win at Afraha Stadium courtesy of striker Boniface Omondi.

Prior to this, K’Ogalo defense had occasionally been called upon to fight for the club when Zoo lodged attacks in search of goals from the champions. Goalkeeper Mapigano, who has never been the darling of fans from the recent matches, also stood tall between the posts to deny Zoo.

And while speaking after the match, Polack noted the keeper’s efforts asserting that he showed the required stability to keep a clean-sheet in the match. The Briton also mentioned his defenders in the praise-talk.

“My defence was strong at the back and it worked to our advantage and our keeper [Mapigano] was also in good shape, they [Zoo] hit the crossbar and I think that was the only time they came close to scoring but I am very happy with the result and the performance,” he said.

He also noted a general improvement coming from their Caf Champions league fall to USM Alger and their previous league match.

With the Zoo Kericho win, Gor Mahia stormed into the league’s top position with 12 points from four matches. AFC Leopards, who were recently gifted walkover points by Sony Sugar, are second with 10 points from five fixtures.

Kisumu All Stars and Chemelil Sugar are on the relegation zone while Sony Sugar are 16th on the table.
