The arrest of three student leaders of Multimedia University who led a protest against reckless driving by matatu drivers on Magadi Road has set twitter on fire with other students demanding for their release.

Through a trending twitter hashtag; , the students are now calling for the release of their Chairperson Nimo Sheikh, Secretary-General Steve Ogola and Academic Secretary Jillo who were arrested on Monday morning.

The three were leading other students in protesting and barricading part of Magadi Road after one of their own was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident.

The first year student at the institution was last week reportedly hit by a reckless speeding matatu and is currently receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital under Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Following the incidence, police were called to restore order after the students paralysed operations on the busy Magadi road for hours.

Students’ deaths linked to careless driving along Magadi road have hit headlines in the last five years with the students taking to the roads on at least two occasions.

The students now want justice for their arrested colleagues who they say were only advocating for their rights. They have accused police officers of interfering with their peaceful demonstrations promising to continue until justice is served.

Here are some of the trending tweets from the irritated ‘Comrades’;

3 hours agoEvery Kenyan has the right to peaceful demonstration. Release student leader Multimedia University and President of all Universities in Kenya. Leaders have right to Air there disatisfaction.

 5 hours agoAre they trying to justify that hitting a student is totally normal…and seeking justice is illegal? What kind of nonsense is this!???

Reckless driving has taken the lives of many fresh comrades. It is high time something needs to be done , especially setting up a convenient zebra crossing outside the university gate as well as sanity in the Rongai matatu industry.
