Good Morning!

Catching up with you every morning is always our pleasure. Hope you are up and running; which is the least that these tough economic times demand from us all.

Mike Sonko is a man known to speak tough on corruption. The Nairobi County boss has fired several employees over allegations that they stole public money. But it seems Sonko, just like all other politicians preach water and drink wine. The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has traced more than Ksh20 million of public funds to Sonko’s accounts! Shocked?

We are not done with governors yet. Kenya Revenue Authority is now going after a couple of governors who have allegedly failed to pay taxes. Are taxes even a choice for anyone? At least not for the ‘common citizen’ like you and me.

It isn’t too good news for some teachers who defied no-nonsense Education CS Professor Magoha and disrupted the new curriculum training sessions across the country. They are fired!

Here are the stories making headlines on Opera News this morning.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is at the centre of a corruption storm for allegedly pocketing up to Sh20 million from a lucrative garbage collection contract that now threatens to end his nine-year political career. Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives claim that some of the firms that won the Sh357 million tender wired it into his bank accounts through proxies.

Sonko blamed people he did not name in his office for making the payments behind his back.

They say think before you leap. Some teachers seem to have bitten more than they can chew by disrupting the new curriculum training sessions and have found themselves between a rock and a hard place. The teachers will now be fired and any benefits paid to them, and any other facing disciplinary action will be recovered.

This is set to escalate the already strenuous relationship between the teachers’ employer and their giant union. Out of 219 teachers facing disciplinary cases, information from TSC shows 42 teachers have been dismissed and 124 interdicted.

KRA is set to go after Nairobi and six other counties who allegedly failed to remit Sh13 billion in taxes. The taxman is also going after the governors to recover tax due from payments made to county service providers and contractors.

They are Value Added Tax (VAT), income tax on profits, where some service providers are paid huge sums of money by various counties but fail to declare these for tax purposes. This is additional baggage to some who already have corruption tags around their necks.
