Why Outgoing Auditor General Edward Ouko Is Worried of His Life Than Before

Outgoing Auditor General Edward Ouko says life after office will most likely render his security vulnerable.

Outgoing Auditor General Edward Ouko has revealed that he is likely to get more worried about his security after officially clearing from office.

When asked, by Citizen Tv at Newsnight Show, whether he was once afraid of his life, Ouko said he was a bit naive then and revealed that his family was more worried than him.

“… my family was more worried because when I told them I had received a phone call they became nervous. For me, it was part of the job… but in a way I feel I was more secured as an Auditor General while in office than when I will be out the office,” said Ouko.

The retiring auditor added that he is feeling vulnerable since he is uncertain whether his security details will be maintained.

“…anybody who has any evil motive would not have manifested it when am in the office. Because they know I have security. Now imagine when you leave the office and you no longer have security? I feel it is the most insecure moment,” he added.

The first-ever Auditor General also revealed that, on numerous occasions, he received odd phone calls from unfamiliar sources in relation to his duties.

He said such incidences were now water under the bridge adding that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations acted swiftly as at when the cases arose.

Ouko was appointed on August 27, 2011, by then-President Mwai Kibaki and has since served Kenya for a non-renewable eight-year term.

His term in office was not a walk in the park after he found himself at the receiving end of several scathing attacks.

In 2016, President Uhuru attacked him at Statehouse over his investigations into the Sh280 billion Eurobond saga.

Ouko is not yet decided on his next assignment, because he first needs to re-organise his personal affairs that he says “have greatly suffered over time.”
