Uhuru’s effort to save corrupt ex-minister hits a dead end

One of the ambassadors who was endorsed by the legislators although the character was called into question has been dropped off by President Uhuru Kenyatta from his ambassadorial posting to Austria and replaced with Kenya’s envoy to Washington DC, Robinson Njeru Githae.

Dr Hassan Wario, who was serving as Kenya’s ambassador to Austria and the former Sports Cabinet Secretary was dropped as he is fighting to clear his name in Kenyan courts for being charged with six counts of abuse of office.

Hassan Wario was charged over allegations of embezzling of funds during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mr Hassan was one of the Kenyans who was alleged to have been rejected by the host country for reasons that were never given despite sources in the executive saying the diplomats had not reported to work because President Uhuru Kenyatta is yet to commission them.

Wario was among six envoys vetted and approved by Parliament but who had a difficult time in reporting to their positions.

The President also nominated Michael Mubea, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption, as ambassador to Dublin in Ireland to replace Richard Opembe who will move to the Kenyan mission in Madrid, Spain, which had been headed by Severine Luyali.

The changes reflect a proposal that Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma filed in March, to improve implementation of foreign policies.

The change in positions is also meant to address the desire to change Kenya’s image as most of the replacements have occurred in embassies where Kenyans in the diaspora had consistently complained of poor service.
