Spurs set to troll Arsenal at legends match

Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium will see action again

Tottenham are set to play their second test event at their brand new stadium today.

Around 50,000 supporters are expected through the doors to watch a squad of legends face some of Inter Milan’s greatest ever players.

And what better occasion could there be to troll your rivals.

Nayim celebrates Tottenham’s FA Cup win

The mutual hatred between Arsenal and Spurs is hardly a secret, starting when the Gunners upped sticks from Woolwich and parked their tanks of the Lilywhites’ lawn back in 1913, moving into their old Highbury ground.

And the rivalry grew in 1919 when, somehow, the Football League voted to promote Arsenal and not Tottenham to a newly enlarged First Division, despite Spurs finishing higher than their neighbours in the Second Division in the last pre-war season.

Nayim celebrates winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup

It’s grown exponentially with titles won at White Hart Lane and many other controversial moments along the way – Sol Campbell, we’re looking at you.

But Tottenham are ready to land brilliantly petty blow on their rivals as they get set to open their incredible new arena.

One legend taking part in the match with be their former midfielder Nayim who won the FA Cup with the club in 1991 – that’s not all he’s famous for though.

After leaving Spurs for Real Zaragoza in 1993 he starred in the club’s 1994/95 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup run and it was there he played Arsenal in the final.

The game went into extra-time with the score at 1-1, thanks to John Hartson’s strike which has cancelled out Juan Esnaider’s opener.

Set to go to penalties, Nayim stepped and, in the final minute of the match, he lobbed David Seaman from long range to win his side the trophy.

Spurs would later sing ‘Nayim from the halfway line’ with glee, celebrating their rivals’ misfortune.

And they’re set to rub it in again – 24 years later!

It’s appears the club are selling shirts with names and numbers ahead of the legends game and while the likes of Steffen Freund and Darren Anderton will wear their own numbers, Nayim appears, according to one picture which has emerged on Twitter, to be wearing No.50 – a play on his remarkable goal.

And supporters are loving it!
