Building Bridges? What President Kenyatta and Ruto Discussed Following a Meeting at the DP’s Office

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday visited and held talks with Deputy President William Ruto at the latter’s office in Nairobi.

Mr Kenyatta spent lunch hour at the Harambee House Annex and sources said the two leaders had a lunch meeting.

Their talks came amid a heightened war of words over the anti-corruption fight, a row that has threatened to tear apart the ruling Jubilee Party.

The agenda of the meeting was not immediately clear but Mr Kenyatta’s motorcade could be seen outside Mr Ruto’s office on Harambee Avenue.

The President is scheduled to leave for Mombasa after the meeting with his deputy.

There are still scanty details on whether the two have discussed matters related to Jubilee or official government business.

It is a very rare occurrence for Uhuru to visit Ruto at either his Harambe Annex or official residence in Karen.

The visit comes at a time when Jubilee MPs have demanded that Uhuru meets them to discuss the growing rifts within the ruling party. This, they have said, should happen before the State of the Nation Address expected on April 4.

There have been calls from the opposition to impeach Ruto. Siaya Senator James Orengo proposed the impeachment of Deputy President. Orengo vowed on Sunday to institute an impeachment motion against Ruto.

The Senate Minority Leader said a Deputy President can be kicked out of office if it’s found that he or she has violated the Constitution or any other law.
