They’re finally pulling the plug and many fans remain shocked. Radio Africa Group is set to close one of its popular radio stations XFM, on Friday, to prepare for the unveiling of a new station dubbed Smooth FM.
A source from the Waiyaki Way-based media house was heard whispering that the executives were finally pulling the plug on the station over financial constraints.
XFM, famed for its elaborate playlists consisting of mostly rock music, was reportedly straining the media house with very thin revenue margin.
It was not, however, clear if the station was making losses at the time of this writing.
The source further divulged that part of the staff would be transferred to the new station, Smooth FM, which will specialise on Rythm and Blues (RnB) music.
Among the presenters set to make the switch is Classic 105‘s Drive show presenter Terry Muikamba. She would be the first to move.
Muikamba however disclosed that she was not aware of the new changes at the station since she had not been to work yet.
She was set to report to work on Friday, March 15.
The station’s breakfast show presenter Nick Ndeda first hinted of the closure through a post on social media that revealed the station would soon close and he would end his 7-year run at XFM.
“So, I’m doing my final show on XFM tomorrow. It’s been an awesome 7 years hosting that zany morning show. I had great shoes to fill following Fareed Khimani. Tomorrow, let’s do it one last time! And if you wanna send samosas to the studio then all I can say is aaamen!” posted Ndeda on Thursday.
