Maria Obonyo is an extraordinary woman. She warmed the hearts of many when she decided to enroll in school despite her old age.
According to Uganda’s Daily Monitor, the old learner’s dream is to become a teacher once she completes her education. Maria who is a farmer said she decided to get an education after all her relatives passed on and there was nobody to look after her.
“I decided to enroll at the school because I lost all my relatives and there was nobody to take care of me. I am determined to study until I graduate from Makerere University as a teacher,” she said.
The octogenarian said once she is done with her primary and secondary education, she would love to join university.
In the sheer commitment to prove her ridiculing haters wrong, Maria not only went back to school to learn how to read and write but also to get a job.
According to Stella Tayona, the school’s director, the aged pupil enrolled in her school at baby class and graduated at the top of the class. “She is a hardworking pupil who never misses classes and is social with fellow classmates,” Tayona said.
