How is Manchester United planning to line up against relegation threatened Southampton?

It was a tense mid week clash for Manchester United when they faced Crystal Palace over the week considering the high number of injured players the club had but it all ended with win with the Manchester based club

With that great win, the Devils look forward to a great win when they face relegation threatened Southampton, Anthony Martial looks set to miss Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday.

The forward didn’t arrive at the Lowry Hotel with the rest of the squad and will instead aim to make the midweek trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League as he continues to recover from a groin injury.

Marcus Rashford did join up with the squad however, and three youngsters are in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ranks, but Mason Greenwood is not one of them having not arrived at the hotel.

The teenage striker was on the bench at Selhurst Park but it looks like he may miss out this weekend, unless he is a late arrival with the rest of the squad. James Garner, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong are all in the provisional squad to face the Saints at Old Trafford.

Sergio Romero was not spotted by photographers, however. Solskjaer hasn’t mentioned the back-up goalkeeper with regard to his injury crisis, but if he was unavailable it would leave just David De Gea and Lee Grant as goalkeepers in the squad.

Players have been allowed to arrive separately in the past and it may be that Romero joins up with the squad later on. Solskjaer confirmed Rashford was a likely starter against the Saints when he spoke to the media on Friday morning, but he did reveal that Martial was unlikely to feature.

“It’s the last session today but we’re not going take any risks,” he said. “Maybe Anthony, but it might just be a few more days before he’s ready, so probably the squad will look similar to what it did at Wednesday.”He (Rashford) still felt it Wednesday night but he’ll be ready, I’ll probably start him.

“You do have a plan but then you get suspensions, injuries. That one injury or one suspension might change the whole dynamic. It’s a matter of seeing who’s available now. Wednesday night at Selhurst Park is a tough one and then Friday morning still.

“So not too much recovery time. We’ll make our minds up tonight.”

None of the injured players who missed the midweek win at Crystal Palace look to have returned to be part of the fixture against Southampton. There was no Phil Jones, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic or Ander Herrera, as well as no Martial.

Garner made his debut off the bench at Selhurst Park and he could be amongst the substitutes again on Saturday.

“I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future,” Solskjaer said. “He knows we believe in him, we’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick. I know he’s young and I know it’s not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he’s the same mould, he plays simple passes, plays through the lines. Scott McTominay did really well today, some of the passes through the lines into Paul were excellent.

“You’re at Man United, so Michael had the pressure of coming in after Roy Keane, that’s just the way it is at Man United.”
