A new twist to an ancient urban legend has resulted in widespread reminders for parents to keep an eye on the internet habits of their children.

Recently, posts flooded social media surrounding the so-called ‘Momo Challenge,’ continuing a disturbing hoax from 2018.

It claims popping eyed sinister messages and images are being hidden in content targeting children, ultimately coercing them into harming themselves or others.

YouTube recently denied the existence of such videos on its platform for children, saying they have been unable to identify examples of the ‘Momo Challenge.’

However, concerns over the possibility of malicious content targeting children have prompted important reminders for parents to take an active interest in their kids’ internet usage, and to teach safe internet practices.

While ‘Momo’ may not be real, there are still risks when surfing the web.

Groups like ‘National Online Safety’ are also using the opportunity to encourage people to check the validity of what they’re sharing to avoid spreading false information or panic around urban legends.
