Police arrested five people along Thika Road who were ferrying self-propelling grenade launchers on motorcycles.
Initial reports indicate that the five were part of a nine-man gang that was riding on three motorbikes to unknown destination. Their mission is also undisclosed.
The Monday evening incident saw police confiscate the high-tech weapon that was carried in a heavy shopping bag.
The suspects allegedly hurled a grenade at police who were in pursuit but the weapon did not detonate.
The five have been identified as Kevin Opiyo Onyango (24), Maricus Odhiambo (30), Moses Okiri Nyarianga (21), Collins Juma Oduor (19), and Samwel Wanyoike Njeri (19).N
On February 15, police apprehended a student of Nyeri National Polytechnic on suspicion that he may have been planning to bomb himself.
Police revealed that the student, Bruce Ndegwa, had some electronic gadgets strapped around his stomach, waist and chest.
“He was found near Dedan Kimathi University entrance around 1:30 pm. Officers on patrol arrested the young man and took him to Kabiruini police post,” County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia told journalists.
He was handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit for interrogation.
