Arsenal striker Lacazette set to miss both legs of Europa League last 16 tie after ban increased

Alexandre Lacazette will miss both legs of Arsenal’s Europa League last 16 tie against Rennes after UEFA increased his suspension from one to three matches. The Frenchman will have to sit out the last 16 tie following a UEFA disciplinary ruling Lacazette was sent off for an elbow during the Gunner’s last 32 first leg against BATE Borisov last week, sitting out Thursday’s second leg at Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette has been banned by UEFA for both legs of the Gunners’ Europa League round of 16 clash against Rennes. Lacazette was sent off in the first leg of Arsenal’s round of 32 game against BATE Borisov after he elbowed Aleksandar Filipovic.

The Frenchman missed the second leg against BATE and will now serve a further two-match ban. Arsenal face Rennes away on March 7 before hosting the French side at Emirates Stadium on March 14.

With Danny Welbeck injured, Lacazette’s suspension means that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the only senior striker available to Arsenal against Rennes, although the Gunners can also call upon youngster Eddie Nketiah.

Lacazette has scored 12 goals in 33 appearances for Arsenal this season, with one of those goals having come in the Europa League. Having suffering a shock 1-0 loss in the first leg against BATE, Arsenal responded to win 3-0 in the second leg on Thursday night and secure their place in the next stage of the competition.

Arsenal may choose to appeal against the ban and it is unsure what the London club will do yet
