Whenever an important game in a cup competition comes, some fans somehow start forgetting everything Sergio Romero has done before and clamour for David De Gea to start in goal. All in vain. Normally, Romero puts in a Man of the Match performance after such demands.
Against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, he didn’t have too much job to do but when needed he was there. He collected another clean sheet keeping attempts from David Luiz and Pedro away as United won 2-0.
He now has 27 clean sheets in 42 matches for United which takes his percentage to 64.2%. It’s better than any other Man United goalkeeper who has played at least three games with the senior side.
This is not to degrade De Gea in any way but to show Romero is also more than capable. Although he’s normally used against worse oppositions, he’s still faced some important oppositions over the years and was the No 1 in the Europa League.
David De Gea has kept 127 clean sheets in 347 games across all competitions with United which makes his percentage only slightly more than one third. He has only conceded 349 goals.
