NEMA suspends Ruto’s project in Baringo

Road construction commissioned by Deputy President William Ruto in Baringo has indefinitely been suspended in Baringo County for not adhering to the environmental rules.

The construction of the 36-kilometer Oinamoi-Kapluk-Barwesa Road in July 2018 launched by DP Ruto in a bid to open up the lower parts of Kerio Valley region.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Baringo Director Josiah Nyandoro faulted the road’s contractor, SBI International as well as the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) for not carrying out environmental impact assessment.

They therefore gave until February 28 to comply with the regulations, failure to which they will face the full force of the law.

Residents near the road lodged complaints over too much dust and noise emanating from the construction.

They lamented over business centers being closed including food kiosks and hotels.
