Nairobians could find themselves walking to work on Wednesday in the coming weeks. That is if a suggestion by the Ministry of Transport is implemented.
The Ministry wants Wednesdays and Saturdays to be car-less days. This means that no cars will be allowed in the Central Business District on these days.
According to Transport CS James Macharia, the exercise will allow hawkers to the streets during the two-day weekly car-less days in the CBD. He has suggested that this should begin in February.
There was an uproar last year, when governor Mike Sonko banned Matatus from accessing the CBD. The move forced Kenyans to walk for longer distances to work and was effected for one day only.
The government has since switched to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system as an alternative way to decongest the city.
The BRT system will be run in collaboration with the private sector and BRT buses will be owned and managed by a Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) in which private PSV operators will be shareholders. pic.twitter.com/JC8aXuQRTn

Macharia said that the buses will arrive from the country in the next few weeks.
