Why Moses Kuria might lose his parliamentary seat

It is rumored that vocal Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria may be headed to a new party, a move that has caught many of his supporters by surprise.

According to Nation, the MP was welcomed to the Democratic Party (DP) by its officials and was allowed to publicise it.

However Kuria would have to defend his seat if he goes ahead with his plans of ditching Jubilee.

“Kuria’s support is welcome though according to the law, he would lose his seat in Parliament if he ditches Jubilee formally,” DP Chairperson Esau Kioni told journalists.

He added that there were many other politicians, including sitting elected leaders, and those who lost in the last election, who have shown interest to join the party.

The Gatundu South MP is known for his controversial remarks, the most recent being about President Uhuru Kenyatta’s performance in Central Kenya.

In what may have been a move to test the opinion of his supporters, Kuria posted DP’s flag on his Facebook page.

During the 2017 campaigns, when other parties were called upon to fold and join Jubilee, DP was adamant that it would not, but still supported President Kenyatta’s reelection.

The Party was founded by retired President Mwai Kibaki after multi-partyism was introduced.

DP later became a partner in the National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC) that propelled Kibaki to the Presidency in 2002.  When Party of National Unity (PNU) was announced as the ticket Kibaki would seek a second term on, DP’s popularity declined.

During the 2017 General Election, the party was able to secure representation through Tharaka Nithi MP George Gitonga.
