The Muslim community in Kenya have stormed the internet and all media channels to express their disagreement with the new courts ruling on wearing of hijab in school. To most of them they have felt that this is straight betrayal of their religion.
This feeling cannot be overlooked. It is normal for any human being to feel betrayed. But how well did we get to understand the new rule on wearing of hijab?
The Supreme court yesterday overturned the court of Appeal ruling of wearing of hijabs in schools after appeal by Methodist Church.
In a triumph for the Methodist Church of Kenya, the court in a majority decision on Thursday said the ruling by the Appellate court was against the school uniform policy.
Debunking the misunderstanding
Most people did not understand the court ruling. This i can blame on the hard headlines run by various media channels. But here is the fact;
The rule does not completely restrict all schools from allowing students wearing hijabs. The schools have been granted the absolute right to choose whether to allow or not to allow wearing of hijabs.
This means that the committees running schools will have the say to stipulate the uniform policy. This does not mean that all schools will ban wearing of hijabs. Most of them will allow their students to wear hijabs as a form of promoting religious cohesion.
This is the real fact, nothing more so no need of throwing everything over the shelf. It means now parents and students will be part and parcel of implementation of the school policy.
