Another Man United Legend to Apply for Senior Old Trafford Role

Schmeichel will decide whether he will apply for the role over Christmas.

Peter Schmeichel is considering throwing his hat into the ring to become Manchester United’s director of football.

United intend to appoint a head of football as part of a long-overdue restructure following Jose Mourinho’s sacking on Tuesday morning.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign as interim boss got off to the perfect start on Saturday night as United beat Cardiff 5-1 in Wales.

It remains the club’s plan to replace Solskjaer at the end of the season, when a new manager will be brought in to work alongside a director of football.

Former boss Mourinho didn’t want to work under a director of football and Ed Woodward respected the Portuguese’s wishes.

However, with Mourinho gone Woodward will press on with appointing one and Schmeichel, who spent eight years as United’s first-choice goalkeeper between 1991 and 1999, is considering applying for the role.

“I’m actually thinking about putting my name in there,” Schmeichel told the BBC. “It’s a tough thing to find out about yourself, everyone looks at you; the scrutiny, and I’m not afraid of that. It’s also a really big change in what I’ve done.

The Dane, 55, added: “I would like to see [the job go to] someone who has played there, and can bring some of that Sir Alex [Ferguson] mentality back in the whole of the football club.

“I’m considering: ‘Do I have the qualities?’ And if I come up with an answer to that question, then I will put my name in the hat.

“I’ll have a good think about this over Christmas and New Year and make a decision about it.”
