Matatu Owners Association (MOA)have accused cartels in the industry for collaborating with the government to frustrate them.
MOA have opposed to the government’s plan to phase out 14-seater public service vehicles.
The Association led by its Chairman Kushin Mushiri claimed that there are cartels within the matatu industry who have collaborated with the government to phase out the 14-seaters.
The matatu owners also disowned Dickson Mbugua saying: “..according to some sources he is now collaborating with government yet he doesn’t own a matatu or a bus.”
“For a long time we have not held any elections to choose any leader. Dickson is not representative. He is just an impostor and in office illegally,” said the Association.
“He also does not have the qualifications required to be a member as he has no public service vehicle,” they added.
“We will also not let the government phase out our matatus without proper compensation. This business has been our life; it’s what our families depend on,” he added.
Mushiri alleges that cartels have been promised 64 buses in exchange for their collaboration.
They called on the government to compensate authentic matatu owners before they proceed with any plans to phase out matatus.
