France player retires from international duty after World Cup win

Adil Rami has called time on his France career after their World Cup triumph. The Marseille defender was an unused substitute as Les Bleus beat Croatia 4-2 in the final. He did not play a single minute of football in Russia but has been praised for his influence on the squad. Rami, 32, has now decided to retire from international football in the wake of his country’s stunning success. The centre-back, who won 35 caps for France, told TF1: “The France team is over for me.”
He went on to hail Didier Deschamps’ squad as the most together he had seen. Rami added: “Even if I did not play, I had to be ready at all times to play 90 minutes. I trained twice a day. The team was huge, I do not have words for that. The atmosphere is extraordinary.
“I have never seen a team from France with such an atmosphere, so much joy, every day, even after the matches, before the matches. It’s beautiful.”
