Question marks remain over his future at Anfield after his disastrous Champions League final performance but Karius has played in friendlies against Chester, Tranmere and Bury so far this summer. Liverpool emerged as 3-2 victors against Tranmere but it was an evening to forget for Karius as he quickly returned to the spotlight with another error. He managed to spill a free-kick, which allowed it to bounce in front of him rather than taking it cleanly and Tranmere’s Jonny Smith got to the rebound first to make it 3-1. Liverpool are understood to be tracking a number of goalkeepers but have yet to make a formal offer.
Danny Ward is expected to be given a chance to stake his claim for a starting role after impressing in the early stages of pre-season. Karius is expected to be a part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad when they head across the Atlantic for their pre-season tour. The Reds play Blackburn on Thursday evening before taking on Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United Stateside.
