FIFA’s Fair Play Rules Could Also See Argentina Getting Knocked Out of the World Cup

If Lionel Messi’s Argentina does register a 2-0 win against Nigeria followed by a 2-1 win for Iceland over Croatia, the Albiceleste will still be knocked out of the FIFA World Cup, due to fair play.

The above result will leave Iceland and Argentina with same points and the same goal aggregate.

Now, as established by FIFA, the qualification from the group stages in the World Cup should be decided on the fair play rule and Argentina have already collected three yellow cards, to Iceland’s none.

According to FIFA, in that specific and rare scenario, the score of each team will be counted with regards and in consideration with the occasions on which they have been penalised throughout the tournament.

This implies that yellow cards would mean a one point deduction, indirect red card will see three points deducted, direct red card will incur a four point penalty and the combination of yellow and direct red card is a five point deduction leaving Argentina with a lot to consider when they head into their game against Nigeria.
