Top African players not going to the world cup

The world cup is the easily the biggest sporting event known to man. Many football players dream of just featuring in one edition leave alone win one. Africa has had it’s fair share of representatives over the years and this year’s edition will be no different as five countries will be representing the continent in Russia.

This article will however focus on top African players who will not be gracing the event.

Riyad Mahrez

Algeria’s finest export will not be going to Russia to test himself among the best. The Leicester winger who won the PFA player of the year in 2016 has yet to hit the same heights he did when Leicester won the league in 2016 and as a result will have to wait another 4 years for his shot at World Cup glory.

Ayew Brothers

Jordan and Andre Ayew will be sitting this one out after failing to inspire Ghana in what was a very dismal qualifying campaign for the Black Stars.

Eric Maxim Chuopo Moting

The Stoke  City forward will be behind the scenes as the best players battle it out in Russia. This is after he failed to inspire Cameroon past the African qualification rounds. Maxim joined Stoke city last summer from Bundesliga club Schalke 04.
