Thauvin strikes late to keep Marseille’s Champions League hopes alive

Florian Thauvin grabbed 10-man Marseille an exciting 3-3 draw at Guingamp on Friday to keep their expectations of achieving the Champions League with a main three complete in France alive.

The Europa League finalists are behind Monaco, who involve third, on objective distinction and are one point unfastened of second-set Lyon, who would now be able to secure their Champions League spot with a win at Strasbourg on Saturday.

Marseille will have two opportunities to meet all requirements for Europe’s chief rivalry one week from now in Wednesday’s Europa League last against Atletico Madrid in Lyon, and in the event that they lose that, on the most recent day of the Ligue 1 season on May 19.

The away side hustled into a 2-0 lead at the Stade de Roudourou inside 14 minutes through Valere Germain’s header and Thauvin’s 25th objective of the season. However, Clement Grenier pulled one back for Guingamp and balanced from the punishment spot in the 52nd moment after Lucas Ocampos’ handball.

“We lost the match, we didn’t win it, it was a pass on their first objective,” said Marseille mentor Rudi Garcia. “At 2-1 it wasn’t a similar match. We neglected to return for the second half, and what happened, happened.

“Be that as it may, on the off chance that we didn’t win, it is most importantly our blame, clearly.”
