Lawmakers drawn from ODM,Jubilee and other political parties have ganged up against the harsh tax regime imposed by KRA which has lead to the shutdown of mainstream betting companies.

The MPs have argued that the move by the State to shut down betting firms could drive the business underground and have far reaching consequences on the social and economic agenda of this country.

MPs lamented that the proposal to tax stakes is not viable in any given economy and will definitely result in a boom in underground illegal business.

This follows a move by betting companies to to levy 20% on the gamblers even before placing their bets.

Nominated Jubilee Senator Isaac Mwaura  accused  some Cabinet Secretaries of misleading President Uhuru Kenyatta which has resulted into the shutdown of betting industries in Kenya.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino insisted that Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i is pursuing his personal interests in the current shut of betting companies. Babu Owino alleged that Matiang’i is scheming to create a betting market monopoly by awarding BetLion which belongs to one of his closest associates, Bett Nyachae.

Moreover, he has threatened to mobilize Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards fans and all football enthusiasts to eject Matiang’i from office.

The same sentiments have been echoed by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala who has called for a countrywide demonstration until the government heeds to the cry of the punters.
