Copa U20: Sweet revenge as Nyakach whips Itigo to lift national title

Nyanza representatives Nyakach Girls overcame Rift Valley representatives Itigo 2-0 in the Copa U20 final match staged at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday morning.

Itigo defeated Nyakach 1-0 in the group stage and the side got its revenge in the final beating the Rift-Valley representatives 2-0. Faith Omuyaku and Lanolin Aoko scored the goals.

Backed by the home supporters, Nyakach started the match strongly in search of an early opening. They deployed the long-balls approach making it difficult for Itigo to defend, they however didn’t get an immediate breakthrough.

The Rift Valley representatives however managed to contain Nyakach’s early pressure and slowly grew into the game. Harambee Starlets striker Martha Amunyolete and Daisy Cherop were particularly impressive in attack causing Nyakach defenders problems.

The match slowly turned to an edgy clash with both teams attacking with vigor. Poor finishing, however let down both teams.

Just before the break, Nyakach took the lead through Omuyaku Faith. A defensive blunder from Itigo set up the attacker and she fired past a helpless Sharon Jerobon in Itigo goal to give his side a halftime lead.

Nyakach started the second half strongly and nearly got a second in the 58th minute but Aoko Lanolin fluffed hitting the side net from a very prime position.

Providence Khasiala wasted another great Nyakach chance moments later after leaving Itigo defender Sophia Adhiambo for the dead but his shot went over the bar as Nyakach went all out in search of more goals.

Itigo threw away a huge chance to equalize in the 77th minute when Amunyolete’s good delivery went unanswered.

Aoko then sealed the win with a wonderful solo effort in the 84th minute.

In third place playoff, Arch Bishop Njenga mauled Njabini 6-1 to book the final East African School games slot.
