Will Egypt Be Able to Deal With Terrorist Attacks Ahead of AFCON 2019?

AFCON is just around the corner. And as players and fans flock to the Land of the Pharaohs, one can’t help but wonder about the security situation in the North African country.

Indeed, An explosion using a primitive bomb targeted on May 19 a tourist bus near the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is located close to the Giza pyramids.

It wounded at least 12 people, most of whom were tourists from South Africa.

What is worrying is that the bus was transporting 25 tourists from South Africa who were on their way from the airport to the pyramids. Four Egyptians who were in a nearby car were also injured.

This is not the first major attack targeting tourists in the Egyptian Capital.

As a matter of fact, four Vietnamese tourists were killed on December 29th, 2018 after a rudimentary bomb detonated remotely at the Perimeter of the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The explosion comes as tourism in Egypt has picked up again, after witnessing a decline following the January 25 Revolution in 2011 and the crashing of a Russian passenger plane in 2015.

Nevertheless, this will definitely have tourists from all over the continent worried as they move to support their respective teams in the greatest footballing tournament in the region!
