82-year-old mzungu who founded African Children's Choir ordained as Maasai elder

Narok County Maasai community has ordained 82-year-old Irish born Ray Barnett as one of their elders during a colourful ceremony. Baptised with the name Olomunyak which means blessed one, Ray has supported over 52,000 Maasai children and the ceremony was meant to honour his contribution to the community.

Ray’s Foundation, African Children’s Choir said the 82 year old has been officially integrated into the culture of the Maasai community. “I am honoured to be integrated with the Maasai whose cultural beliefs and traditions have added to the wealth of Kenya’s heritage. Their strong leadership and wisdom passed through generations.”

The respected mentor has nurtured public figures including popular TV presenter Mark Maasai. The ordination ceremony started off with Ray taking a small journey with a group of Morans who gave him a short history of their community. Two white goats were then killed after which his representative proceeded to drink the blood mixture.
