US Sanctions DR Congo’s Big Dogs Over Controversial Poll

The US government has placed sanctions on senior DR Congo government officials within a month since the inauguration of Congo’s new president Felix Tshiekedi the brain child of electoral democracy in the controversial pol.

The Department of State on Friday announced public designation and visa restrictions on the DRC National Independent Electoral Commission Chairman Corneille Nangaa and his deputy who presided over last year’s controversial poll.

“The United States Stand with the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the country’s first historical transfer of power. The elections reflect the desires of the people of DRC for change and accountable government institutions. However, there are legitimate concerns over the conduct and transparency of the electoral process.” reads part of the statement

The heads of two arms of government: National Assembly and Constitutional court have also been included on the list. The secretary of state also slapped bans to other official election officials as well as military officials who took part in the violation of human rights.
