#NotYetJamhuri: 55 Years of Independence and stealing?

Fifty five years ago, Kenya was declared an independent state. Our freedom didn’t come on a silver platter. Some people had to die. More were maimed and there are still those who cannot be accounted for.

A day like today in 1963, Kenya was the world’s most promising nation. With young ambitious leaders like Tom Mboy, we had every ingredient to make us a great nation.

But greed, betrayal and tribalism from our political class, have eroded everything that the freedom fighters stood for. And 55 years later since that historic day, it seems like we are still colonized. The white man was replaced by a black white man.

Maybe, just maybe. We would be better off with a white colonizer than the black politicians who are looting everything, left, right and center.

In 2018 alone, it is estimated that Kenyans lost approximately sh. 1 trillion to corruption. That is almost a third of our national budget. Our leaders are stealing even money meant for sick people (read NHIF)

Our president recently declared that the youths are stealing public funds and the only way to stop that is to appoint old men to senior government positions. These old men, according to Uhuru Kenyatta will protect our money.

Instead of curbing corruption, Uhuru with the help of his brother Raila Odinga, subjected Kenyans to an additional 8% tax on fuel products.

At the same time the government is over-borrowing money, money to build projects like the SGR which do not have significant impact on the common Mwananchi.

Is there something to celebrate about this Jamhuri Day?
