These days it has become rampant of the number of cases of obesity and unhealthiness in Kenya, especially among the youth. It is clear as day that healthy living has a huge role to play in keeping heart diseases at bay.
As healthy as you think you are, you might be one breath away from this condition. Here are eight superfoods that will keep your heart strong, pumping and healthy!
1. Berries.
A study showed that women who consumed more blueberries and strawberries have a 32% lower risk of heart attack, as compared to those who ate less. This has been attributed to the antioxidants present in berries, which decrease blood pressure.
2. Salmon.
The omega-3 present in Salmon and other fatty fish make it a superstar when it comes to a healthy heart, and it is recommended to eat fish twice a week to lower the risk of an irregular heartbeat.
3. Red Wine.
Although red wine has been known to lower the risk of heart-related illnesses, more than the recommended one or two glasses a day can actually increase the risk.
4. Oatmeal.
Oatmeal is rich in soluble fibre, which acts as a sponge in the digestive tract to absorb cholesterol so that it is eliminated from the body and not absorbed into the bloodstream.
5. Nuts.
Almonds, macadamia nuts and peanuts, for instance, are not only rich in fibre that is good for the heart, but they are also rich in Omega-3 which as discussed, is great in reducing bad cholesterol.
6. Legumes.
Legumes such as beans and lentils are a great (and tasty) source of protein and because they come from plants, they do not have a lot of unhealthy fats.
7. Green Tea.
Last but not least, is a personal favourite. Green Tea is packed with antioxidants and boasts numerous health benefits and studies have shown that people who drunk four or more cups daily have a 20% reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
There you have it!
