‘Rare’ singer Selena Gomez has taken to Instagram to expose the Kenyan president for not honouring a promise he made at the Global Citizen Festival.

Kenyatta had promised to increase spending in education from 17% to an impressive 30% of the national budget, but Selena and the Global Citizen team have seen no progress or received an update on this.

“Hey guys, its Selena. I just got back from an incredible trip to Kenya where I had the opportunity to meet with remarkable young people and teachers who are fighting for the right to a free, quality and inclusive education. However, countless students in Kenya are not receiving a quality education, including 59% of girls in the country that are not even going to school. As a result, young people across the country, and particularly the poorest and most marginalized are missing out on critical opportunities,” Selena said.

She then went on to reveal that Kenyatta had promised to commit 30% of the national budget to education but that didn’t happen.

“In response to your calls last year at the Global Citizen Festival in South Africa, Kenyan President Kenyatta promised to increase spending in education from 17% to an impressive 30% of the national budget, but we haven’t seen progress or received an update on this commitment yet,” Miss Gomez added.

Selena told her 169 Million followers on Instagram that she needs their help to ensure that this becomes a priority for the president.

“We need to make sure its front of mind for the president and minister for education,” she said concluding her message.
