Details have emerged on the reason why Taita-Taveta Governor Granton Samboja snubbed a crucial senate committee meeting on Tuesday.
The embattled Governor who was impeached by Members of the County Assembly was given a chance to defend himself against the allegations levelled against him but was a no-show.
While the courts barred the Senate against opening the impeachment case, Deputy Senate Speaker Kithure Kindiki would advise the Special Committee chair Njeru Ndwiga that Judiciary had no influence on matters before the senate.
Senator Ndwiga proceeded with the meeting in which Governor Samboja was represented by his legal counsel Nelson Havi.
Havi lectured the Senate Special committee for contravening its own standing order No. 98 (2) which prohibits it from discussing a matter that is actively before a Court of Law.
The lawyer also notified the committee that Taita-Taveta MCAs were yet to formally serve the Governor with a detailed report concerning his impeachment.
“In light of these issues, the prudent thing for the Senate to do is to stay proceedings until the petition is concluded, ” Havi stated.
he said Governor Samboja would only respond to the allegations of gross misconduct upon receipt of the full report from the County Assembly.
The Governor has been in problems after county MCAs failed to approve his 2019/2020 budget following a misunderstanding.
The Governor would threaten to dissolve the County Government should the MCAs fail to budge on their hard stance.
Samboja, a Wiper Party Governor, would snub DP Ruto in his consultations where he met President Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Last month, DP Ruto summoned Taita-Taveta MCAs in a meeting where the elaborate plan to oust the Governor was ostensibly hatched.
