A group of pastors in Kiambu County wants the ongoing constitution review under the Building Bridges Initiatives (BBI) to include the position of a cabinet secretary in charge of Churches

in Kenya included in the recommendations.

Bishop Mark Kariuki who spoke on behalf of Covenant Clergy at Thika Calvary during a national prayers service voiced concerns that the church was left out of the 2010 Constitution changes.

He said time is ripe for churches to have a ministry under a cabinet secretary and declared that they would only support BBI recommendations if their demands are factored in the final report.

The demands come at a time when there is a divided debate in the country whether churches should receive cash donations from politicians or not.

Last Saturday, the Catholic Church banned cash donations from political leaders.

The chairperson of Catholics Bishop Philip Anyolo said they will not allow politicians to bring in money exceeding Ksh50, 000 without a receipt or a letter from the Archbishop.

Bishop Anyolo said, “Our churches will not be used as political platforms or for any other motive other than for the worship of God,”

They also banned all politicians from using pulpits to advance their political agenda.

Should Kenya heed the Pastors’ call, it will be second country after Zambia to have a cabinet slot for religious affairs.

The Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs in Zambia was formed to regulate the mushrooming of fake churches among other roles.
