Accountants’ Body Makes 1 Promise After Mara Heist Exposé

Mr Spencer Sankale who hatched a plan to expose corruption dealings at Maasai Mara University.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) has given its take on the Citizen TV’s exposé detailing corruption activities at Maasai Mara University.

The body through its Chairman Rose Maura in a statement began by expressing the institute’s solidarity with Spencer Sankale and his colleagues, who successfully hatched a plan that saw irregular payments and mismanagement of funds at the university are exposed.

“The institute wants to assure CPA Spencer and other CPA’s out there that we shall endeavour to see that they are protected and not victimized for their patriotism and professional acts of saying no to continued plunder of public resources,” read the statement in part.

The institute went ahead to lament lack of national whistle-blowing legal framework to protect courageous Kenyans willing to expose corrupt deals in the government institutions.

ICPAK suggested the need to pass the Whistle-blowers Act which will lead to the creation of Whistle-blowers Protection Agency.

“ICPAK urges the government to put in place whistle-blower’s legal protection mechanisms to insulate patriotic professionals who refuse to be mired into fraud and professional malpractice,” suggested ICPAK in the statement.

The body also promised to take action on its members if found culpable of any engagements that led plunder of financial resources at Maasai Mara University.

The investigative piece dubbed “The Mara Heist” was aired in the 7 and 9 pm bulletins at the Royal Media-owned television.

The university’s management was put on the nerve center of a series of activities that saw over Sh 190 million misappropriated over a while.

Interestingly, despite the school Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Mary Walingo being placed at the center stage of the fraud, the VC on Monday released a statement thanking Citizen TV for exposing the financial impropriety.

“I would like to take this chance to thank Citizen TV for highlighting the damning heist at the Maasai Mara University.

It helps in the daunting task that I have been undertaking to read the university of the deceptive and gluttonous individuals who have been looting from the university gofers for a while now,” she said in a video shared on Maasai Mara University’s Facebook page

She further added that she has been fighting financial misappropriate for a very long time and once more thanked the TV station for bring the matter to light.
