Many may not understand why the Taxi drivers in Kenya have gone on a strike. According to the drivers, the online app owners and the government through the ministry of transport have failed to listen to their grievances and that’s why they took their constitutional rights to strike.

The drivers and uber firms have been in engaging in price wars, much hurt is felt by the drivers and third party vehicle owners who are never consulted whenever the changes are made.

The mass protest which brought together Uber, Taxify and other digital taxi operators in the country kicked off in Nairobi on Monday morning, forcing commuters who rely on the cabs to look for alternative means of transport. According to the complaint raised by uber drivers, is they use a lot of fuel to get to their clients only for the rides to earn them very little.

“At times we wish we knew the cost of the journey in order to have the option of cancelling it but we do not. We spend up to Sh150 on fuel for a ride that costs Sh200.”

Most Kenyans were now adjusting to the system of using uber services either to report to work or to go for parties and ordinary day errands. Monday might not be as right for some constant riders. Below are ways that would see you through;

Carpooling

That neighbour of yours who works a few blocks away, you would ensure you keep tabs just so you can have an easy way out.

Well, now that the taxis are not in operation, watu ni kusaidiana! If you are blessed with a car and have ample space reach out to those you know might be delighted with your act of kindness. The vice versa also applies, hit your friends or family up for a ride.

Walking in groups

Most Nairobians let’s agree a generally lazy which is not good even for their health. How about if you covered some distance by walking. If no matatus plie that route, then you can do the walking and find your way to your destination. If you happen to use a route that you are unsure about its safety, then walk in numbers. There is safety in numbers, right?

Our default rides are working so how about if you considered having it like the old times. The safety might not be guaranteed but at least you will get home or work as you wish right?

As I had mentioned earlier, now that we hardly get time to exercise our bodies, taking that bike that is in your compound and rushing out to have your things done, would be a great thing right? If you don’t own a mountain bike then a boda boda would do. In fact, you cannot compare the efficiency of a boda boda and an uber with this Nairobi traffic.

This too can come in handy. If you have your gear ready stroll your way through the streets. Killing two birds with one stone has never seemed so easy right?

Car hire

For those of you who cannot do any of the above proposals, then go ahead and rent/hire a car. For those of us who sometimes work during the night shift, hitting up a friend would be fine and ask them to drop you off. Alternatively, you and your colleagues would carpool and have a driver see you off.
